Service Technician
Entry Level (Non-exempt)
Starting pay $18/hour
Job Description:
This job exists to perform all functions necessary for the operations and maintenance of the water utility. Under the general supervision of the Senior Service Tech an entry-level Service Tech can expect to perform semi-skilled field work such as reading water meters, responding to work orders, performing maintenance and repair on water facilities and equipment, including replacing meters, painting hydrants, maintaining utility facilities, locating water lines, etc. The highest duties of this position are accuracy and competence, as well as the ability to communicate. A Service Tech must be willing to work under extreme weather conditions, be called upon to perform strenuous physical duties, and work as a team member.
Entry-level Service Techs receive reviews every six months for the first two years. Our practice is to have regular one-on-one meetings with each employee to provide feedback on their performance.
Position Accountabilities:
High level of accuracy.
Ability to follow written and oral directions.
Ability to use standard keyboard and input on a computer.
Ability to read with comprehension and to write legibly.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Other duties as assigned.
Operate and maintain a variety of water utility equipment.
Required building and site maintenance (plumbing, electrical, and carpentry).
Perform concrete work associated with such projects as sidewalks, street replacements, thrust blocks and valve box installations, and asphalting of streets after installation and repairs have been made.
Inspect and perform maintenance and testing of water utility assets.
Work with the public and vendors as needed
Update documentation of all water utility assets.
Must read meters accurately and efficiently. The failure to obtain an accurate read for any meter may result in immediate dismissal.
Knowledge and willingness to learn and apply safety principles.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor in any weather.
Ability to reliably perform repair and maintenance of equipment.
Ability to learn to use electronic equipment and computers.
Required Experience:
A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent
Physical and Work Environment Requirements:
Work is mostly performed in an outside environment in all types of weather and environmental hazards, including long hours walking in the heat. Subject to loud noise and/or vibration. Proximity to moving mechanical parts, vehicles and backhoes, electrical current, exposure to chemicals, etc.
Must be physically fit to perform work that requires sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, lifting, and digging. Exert more than 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or over 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or above 20 pounds of force regularly to move objects. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus; require the use of hands and fingers to handle objects, tools, and equipment, and to operate a computer and keyboard; communicate verbally and have functional hearing.
Conditions of Hire:
Driver’s license valid in Arizona and good driving record.
Successful candidates must obtain an Arizona Class I operator (water treatment or water distribution) certification within one (1) year of employment or agrees to earn the next applicable level if hired with an existing operator grade.
Must be available for emergency work, as required.
Must successfully pass a medical and fit for duty examination.
Must provide documentation showing US Citizenship or right to work.
